Ian Scott
Englefield Green Community Constable |
As the community policeman for Englefield Green, I work closely within the community to help build bridges to deal with the diverse issues of modern life.
I cannot deal with all these problems on my own. My main area of responsibility has got to be crime and disorder. However, more often than not these problems are exacerbate by social issues that affect all members of the community. Early intervention reduces crime and disorder in the long term. By liaising with other statutory bodies, which may be the different departments of both the local council at Runnymede or Surrey County Council, etc. answers can be found to specific challenges.
I need to be aware of and constantly monitor these issues within Englefield Green to implement a considered response that will be effective and long lasting. Often the Community itself can provide the answers to many of the problems raised. For instance, traffic and youth issues. This is the message that I try to get across in all my dealings with the various groups around the Village, including the Resident's Association.
Englefield Green provides many challenges comprising, as it does, residents from all walks of life. My responsibilities also include the Royal Holloway College, which is a village in its own right, with a large student population and associated problems. Brunel University, the more affluent areas towards the Great Park and the Forest Estate are all part of Englefield Green.
I see community involvement as the key to encouraging and increasing their responsibility to deal with local issues within the village. My ultimate aim is to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, in order to improve the quality of everybody's life. I cannot achieve this without the involvement of the whole community. Everybody has their role to play.
